Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find the role of BRAF mutation in the development of both breast and thyroid cancers in the same patient in Korean women by evaluating the frequency of the mutation.

Materials and Methods: A total of 16 patients with both breast and thyroid cancers who had undergone surgery from March 2010 to February 2014 were included in this study. We analyzed the frequency of the BRAF V600E mutation in each of the breast and thyroid cancer specimens using dual-priming oligonucleotide based real-time polymerase chain reaction.

Results: The BRAF V600E mutation in patients who had breast and thyroid cancer in Korean women was only identified in thyroid cancer but not in breast cancer and the incidence was 56.3% (9/16).

Conclusion: BRAF V600E mutation, which is the most prevalent mutation in patients of thyroid cancer, does not affect breast cancer in the same patients in Korean population.
